Hebrews 10:32, 35-36
"Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering... So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised."
It's interesting to me that in order to encourage and strengthen a group of Christians in crisis, the writer of Hebrews tells them to look back.
We're often told that the way to gain confidence is to not look back, to not think about the past, and to just leave it behind. But in this particular instance, the author advocates a very different type of memory management. He recommends instead of ignoring the struggles from the past, to actually spend some time remembering them.
He says, "Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering... " (Hebrews 10:32)
He was basically saying that if God was able to bring you through once then He can do it again.
Now, I don't know what all you've been through. I don't know how horrible it was. But I do know one thing about you: If you're reading this, then you made it through. You're still here. God brought you through because He intends to see you through to your purpose.
Even if life feels a little shaky right now, regaining your confidence can be as simple as remembering that you've made it this far. You're not where you used to be, and that's good news for the future.
In this moment, you may not know the way forward, but I want you to know that the same God who got you through before is the same God who will get you through this time around.
Don't throw away your confidence. Don't give up. Don't stop now. God has a purpose for you, and that purpose is as secure as the One who has given it to you.
